It is with sadness we note the passing of Twig Com shareholder and founding advisor Mr Jorma U. Nieminen M.Sc. (EE) on 26th September 2015, after a prolonged battle with cancer. Jori kept his familiar forward-looking pace almost to the end.
From early 1970’ies, Jori, ham radio call sign OH1QP, led Salora’s embryonic radio phone unit to dominating the market first in Finland and then also in the other Nordic countries. From 1979, he led Mobira, the 50/50 joint venture of Salora and Nokia, to being the world market leader in cellular mobile telephone sales in 1986-87. In 1988 Jori together with partners founded and then led Benefon, a successful NMT mobile phones provider in the 1990’ies.
From 1994, Benefon developed the MORE, mobile rescue phone, as part of a European Union research consortium. MORE was the first GSM/GPS personal safety alarm, and led to a succession of popular Benefon and TWIG safety phones and personal alarms, and ultimately to the founding of Twig Com.
Mr Nieminen was awarded Dr. Tech h.c. by his alma mater, Aalto University, and IEEE Life Fellow grade, in recognition of his contribution to the creation of the world wide mobile telecommunications industry.
Twig Com Ltd. are proud to continue a part of Jori’s professional heritage.
